Why financial education matters more from 2028

The Money & Pensions Service found money habits form by age seven. Yet financial education has historically been one of the most under-taught topics in primary — squeezed by the rest of the curriculum. That changes from September 2028. The Curriculum and Assessment Review chaired by Professor Becky Francis CBE (final report Nov 2025) confirmed that financial literacy becomes part of the primary curriculum for the first time, with new teaching starting Autumn 2028. Schools are auditing their current provision now. Spark2 has been delivering hands-on financial literacy workshops in primary schools since 2013 — we built our programme around exactly the practical, age-appropriate teaching the new curriculum will require.

🎯

Curriculum-aligned

Maps onto PSHE statutory framework (Living in the Wider World — Money) plus maths objectives on using money, percentages and ratio. Pupil-friendly evidence of coverage for your subject lead.

🧠

Hands-on, not theoretical

Children handle physical coins, run a mini-shop, set savings goals and make real spending choices. Practical learning sticks far better than worksheets — and gives quieter pupils a way in.

📈

Long-term impact

Part of our Future Skills Passport programme — financial literacy is one of the 12 future-ready skills schools track from Reception to Year 6. Parents see progression, not just one-off events.

📚 What the 2028 curriculum requires

Get ahead of the September 2028 financial education changes

The Curriculum and Assessment Review (Francis Review) recommended that financial literacy becomes part of the primary curriculum for the first time. The Department for Education has confirmed:

  • New curriculum published Spring 2027. Schools see exact statutory requirements then.
  • First teaching September 2028. Schools must be delivering financial education as part of the statutory primary curriculum.
  • Practical lessons in money management — earning, saving, budgeting, spending — for every primary year group.
  • Strengthened links to maths (percentages, ratio, decimals) and PSHE statutory framework.

Forward-planning schools are already auditing provision. Heads and PSHE leads are asking: "How prepared are we?" Booking a Spark2 financial education workshop now means you're delivering exactly the kind of provision the new curriculum requires — and have evidence of it before inspectors do.

Money workshop FAQs

The questions teachers, PSHE leads and Heads ask most when booking a money workshop.

When does financial education become part of the primary curriculum?

September 2028. The Curriculum and Assessment Review (Francis Review) recommended financial literacy becomes part of the primary curriculum for the first time. The new curriculum is published Spring 2027; statutory teaching starts Autumn term 2028. Schools are auditing provision now.

What are financial education workshops for primary schools?

Hands-on sessions that teach children financial literacy — earning, saving, budgeting and spending — through interactive challenges and games. Sometimes called "money workshops". Delivered in your school hall by an expert facilitator, adapted by age group for EYFS to Year 6.

Are money workshops part of the curriculum?

Yes. Financial education sits inside the PSHE statutory framework (Living in the Wider World — Money) and links to maths objectives on using money, percentages and ratio. Strong evidence of coverage for your subject lead and governors.

How much do money workshops for schools cost?

Half-day workshops start at £499; full days £499_TEMP. Most schools book a full day to reach every year group. Pupil Premium and PSHE budgets routinely cover the cost. All resources included.

What year groups can take part?

EYFS through to Year 6. Each activity is age-differentiated. EYFS focus on coin recognition and 'enough vs not enough'. KS1 covers earning, saving and choices. KS2 layers in budgeting, prioritisation and the maths of percentages, VAT and interest.

Do you run sessions during Money Week or Financial Capability Week?

Yes — November (Financial Capability Week) and June (My Money Week) are our busiest windows. Book early to secure a date during national money education weeks. We also fit naturally into Enterprise Week and end-of-year topic-led learning.

Are there free resources for teachers?

Yes. Our Manage Money classroom kit includes year-group lesson plans, assembly slides, pupil activity sheets and a parent letter — free to download for any UK primary school. Use it standalone or to extend the workshop.

How do I know it'll be a good fit for my school?

Every booking starts with a 15-minute pre-visit briefing call where we ask what your school is already covering, what year groups will be involved, and what the day's logistics look like. We adapt the session content to fit.

What's the link to the Future Skills Passport?

Money Education is one of the 12 future-ready skills tracked in our Future Skills Passport. Every workshop unlocks progress tracking in the Passport, so financial literacy becomes a year-on-year measure of pupil development — not a one-off event.
