British Science Week is one of the most important fixed points in the primary curriculum calendar. Run by the British Science Association, it gives schools a structured 10-day window in March to celebrate science and elevate it above the usual Friday-afternoon practical. For primary leaders, BSW is an excuse to dedicate sustained classroom time to investigation, observation and the kind of cross-curricular work that connects science to everything else.
British Science Week 2027 runs from 5–14 March. The British Science Association also runs a small-but-significant funding stream called the Kick Start Grants — typically £100 to £700 — which schools serving disadvantaged communities can apply for. Applications usually open in autumn the year before, so it’s worth checking the BSA website from September 2026.
You don’t need to register your school to take part. Many schools run a mix of classroom investigations, a whole-school assembly, an enrichment day, or invite a workshop provider to deliver hands-on sessions for every year group.
The British Science Association announces each year’s theme in the months leading up to the event. The 2027 theme will be confirmed later this year — we’ll update this page as soon as it is.
Every BSW has a theme designed to be broad enough to flex into any year group’s science teaching. Recent themes include ‘Time’ (2024), ‘Change and adapt’ (2025) and ‘Curiosity — what’s your question?’ (2026). Each theme is built to flex into any year group’s curriculum.
Whatever the theme turns out to be, it almost always maps cleanly onto the national curriculum’s emphasis on working scientifically: asking simple questions and recognising they can be answered in different ways (KS1), setting up simple practical enquiries (LKS2), and planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions (UKS2).

What to do when, working back from 5 March 2027.
BSA Kick Start Grant applications usually open in September. Workshop providers (including Spark2) book up by November for BSW.
Decide which year groups do what. Brief your science lead. Order any resources or consumables you don’t already have.
Run a 30-minute teacher briefing. Print activity packs. Confirm your workshop provider and timetable.
Open Monday with assembly. Capture photos and quotes throughout. Run a reflection assembly on Friday and share with parents.
The BSA Smashed Stereotypes Awards and CREST Awards both have entry windows after BSW. Submitting boosts science profile and is great evidence for Ofsted.
