Earth's most dramatic forces — up close

The Volcanoes & Earthquakes VR workshop puts students in places that would be far too dangerous to visit. Children stand at the rim of an erupting volcano, feel the ground shake during an earthquake simulation, and watch tectonic plates collide beneath their feet. It's geology that students never forget.

Year 3 students connect to the Rocks curriculum — understanding how volcanic rock forms and how different rock types are created. Year 4 students explore plate tectonics, earthquake patterns and the Ring of Fire. Every session combines VR immersion with hands-on rock investigation and model building.

Each session includes a Virtual Reality segment where students are transported into immersive environments. Using class sets of VR headsets, children explore 360° recreations of scientific environments — from standing on melting ice caps to walking among dinosaurs.

What Students Do

Volcanoes

Discover the raw power of Earth’s 1,500+ active volcanoes. Students explore how molten rock from the Earth’s mantle erupts as lava, with around 50 eruptions taking place each year — on land and under the sea.

Shield vs. Composite Volcanoes

Compare two dramatically different volcano types. Shield volcanoes have runny lava and gently sloping sides with frequent eruptions. Composite volcanoes have thick, viscous lava, steep sides and rare but explosive eruptions.

Positives and Negatives

Explore the surprising benefits and devastating dangers of living near volcanoes. Students weigh up fertile soil and tourism against destruction of property, air quality issues and the constant risks of eruption.

Cretaceous Period

Travel back to the end of the Mesozoic Era and witness the mass extinction event — often linked to volcanic super-eruptions and asteroid impact — that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
