Ancient Egypt — the most-chosen KS2 ancient civilisation

When the National Curriculum says “a depth study of one ancient civilisation,” the overwhelming majority of UK primary schools pick Egypt. Whichever term you teach it, our workshop becomes the anchor day pupils still talk about.

📅 Autumn Term

Project Launch Day

Schools booking us in autumn typically use the workshop as the wow-factor opening of a Y3 or Y4 Egypt project. VR sets the scene before classroom lessons go deeper across the term.

📅 Spring Term

Peak Egypt Term

Spring is one of the most popular terms for Y3/Y4 Egypt teaching. Workshop bookings fill from late January — book by November if you have specific dates in mind.

📅 Summer Term

Topic Finale

Many schools save the workshop for the end of the topic — using VR and hands-on activities to consolidate everything pupils have learned. A memorable finale that ties the project together.

The wonders of Ancient Egypt, made real

Spark2’s Ancient Egypt workshop uses immersive VR experiences, replica artefacts, and drama-based investigation to bring the ancient world to life. Pupils don’t just hear about the pyramids — they walk inside them. They don’t just read about hieroglyphics — they decode them. They don’t just learn about Pharaohs — they meet them.

Every session is adapted by year group. Y3 sessions focus on daily Nile-side life, simple hieroglyphics, replica artefact handling and gentler versions of the pyramid VR. Y4 sessions go deeper into the politics of the Pharaohs, the engineering of the pyramids, the rituals of mummification, and the legacy that still fascinates the world. Hands-on activities include hieroglyphic name plaques, mummification role-play (with bandages, not bodies), and Pharaoh’s court drama.

Built for the KS2 statutory ancient civilisations depth study — with the depth, accuracy and engagement that turns Egypt from a textbook chapter into a day pupils never forget.

🏛 KS2 Statutory Curriculum

“A depth study of one ancient civilisation”

The National Curriculum requires KS2 schools to deliver “the achievements of the earliest civilizations — an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer, the Indus Valley, Ancient Egypt or the Shang Dynasty”. Ancient Egypt is by far the most-chosen option in UK primary schools.

1

Pyramid Exploration

VR transports pupils inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. They see the scale, the construction, the chambers, and understand why these structures still astonish 4,500 years later. The signature moment of the workshop.

VR Experience
2

Sphinx Encounter

Pupils stand before the Great Sphinx of Giza in VR, learning about its likely origins, the symbolism, the riddles, and the mysteries that still surround it. A perfect introduction to Egyptian iconography.

VR Experience
3

Nile-side Lifestyle

A VR journey along the River Nile, illustrating its central role in Egyptian life: farming, fishing, transport, religion. Pupils investigate what daily life was like for ordinary Egyptians, not just kings and queens.

VR Experience
4

Tomb of Ramesses VI

For Y4: a VR immersion in the magnificently decorated tomb of Ramesses VI in the Valley of the Kings. Pupils see the colour, the art, the hieroglyphics, and decode what the Egyptians believed about the afterlife.

VR Experience · Y4
5

Nefertiti’s Gaze

Pupils come face-to-face in VR with the iconic bust of Queen Nefertiti. They learn about her reign, her revolutionary role in Egyptian religion, and the famous portrait that still defines our image of ancient royalty.

VR Experience
6

Temple Exploration

VR brings pupils inside a fully-decorated Egyptian temple. They see the columns, the carvings, the offerings, and understand the role of religion in Egyptian society. Hands-on hieroglyphic decoding follows.

VR Experience

What pupils take away

Every session is designed around measurable outcomes that align with the National Curriculum and build the historical thinking skills KS2 inspections look for.

🏛

Architectural marvel understanding

Pupils comprehend the engineering achievement of the pyramids and temples — how the Egyptians built them and why they still matter today.

📜

Hieroglyphic literacy

Pupils can recognise and write simple hieroglyphics, understanding this ancient writing system and what it tells us about Egyptian culture.

👑

Cultural & religious understanding

Pupils understand Egyptian beliefs about the afterlife, the role of Pharaohs and gods, and how religion shaped every aspect of life.

🏝

Daily life insight

Pupils can imagine the daily lives of different people in Egyptian society — not just royalty, but farmers, scribes, craftsmen and children.

The pyramid VR had our Year 3s gasping out loud. They’ve been writing about Egypt all week — and using vocabulary I’ve never heard from them before. Hands down the best topic-launch day we’ve ever booked.
