Uncover the Anglo-Saxons who shaped medieval England

The Anglo-Saxons workshop uses immersive VR to transport Year 5 students to early medieval England. Children explore an Anglo-Saxon village, meet Alfred the Great, and discover how Britain changed after the Romans left.

In VR, pupils see how families lived in thatched wooden halls, learn how Alfred defeated the Vikings and championed reading and law, explore Warwick Castle on the site a Saxon queen fortified in 914, and walk a street that changes through the centuries. They understand how the Anglo-Saxons bridged the gap between Roman Britain and the Viking age.

Book a full-day visit and choose a different VR topic for every year group — making it super specific to each class's curriculum and exceptional value for money.

Five VR scenes, adapted by age

Every activity is designed to bring history to life. Your facilitator selects and adapts activities based on the year group.

1

Life in Anglo-Saxon Britain

Step into an Anglo-Saxon village and experience daily life first-hand. Students see thatched wooden halls built with wattle and daub, families farming and making what they needed by hand, and the communal fire at the heart of the settlement.

2

Alfred the Great

Meet the King of Wessex who defeated the Vikings. Students learn about Alfred as a warrior king and as a scholar — he translated books from Latin into English himself and gathered the laws of earlier kings into one code.

3

Inside Warwick Castle

Explore inside one of Britain's mightiest castles. Æthelflæd, daughter of Alfred the Great, built an earth-and-timber fort on this spot in 914; the Normans later raised the stone castle that still stands today.

4

Vikings

Witness the Vikings arriving from Scandinavia in their fast, shallow longships. Students learn about the raids that began in 793 and how they changed Anglo-Saxon life, land and defence.

5

A Street Through Time

Walk along a street that changes from Anglo-Saxon to Viking to medieval times, between 600 and 1500 CE. Students observe how homes, buildings and daily life were transformed over the centuries.

What students take away

Every session is designed around measurable outcomes that align with the National Curriculum and build historical thinking skills.

Settlement and society understanding

Students understand how Anglo-Saxon communities lived, worked, and were governed.

Alfred the Great's legacy

Students understand why Alfred is remembered as 'the Great' — as a warrior, a law-maker and a champion of learning.

Invasion and settlement

Students can explain why the Vikings came to Britain and how the Anglo-Saxons responded.

Continuity and change

Students recognise the transition from Roman to Anglo-Saxon to Viking England as interconnected periods.

The pupils had a wonderful time. The VR sessions were very well thought out, with lots of facts and information given to the children about the scenes. The children were engaged and loved the sessions. Great Workshops.
