The secret recipe

Four ingredients, ten minutes, one giant bubble.

This is the actual mixture our Spark2 presenters use in the school workshop. Costs less than a fiver — most kitchens already have everything except maybe the cornflour.

The mixture

Warm water (not hot)
1 litre

Fairy Liquid (washing-up liquid)
5 tbsp
🌾
Cornflour
2 tbsp

Baking powder
1 tbsp

Method

  1. In a plastic jug, mix the warm water with the Fairy Liquid, cornflour and baking powder. Stir gently — don't whisk. You don't want a foam, you want a smooth mix.
  2. Let it rest for 10 minutes if you can. The bubbles get noticeably stronger.
  3. Pour into a wide, shallow tub — a paddling pool works perfectly, or a large washing-up bowl.
  4. Dip the wand (see below), lift slowly, then walk backwards or wave the wand gently through the air.
  5. If bubbles pop too quickly: add a bit more cornflour. If they're too thin: a touch more Fairy Liquid.
⚠ Quick safety note

Bubble mixture is slippery — wipe up any spills straight away. Outside is best. Children should remove loose-fitting clothing before stepping inside the bubble.

The DIY wand

Build the wand from coat hangers and string.

Around £3 from any DIY shop. Two wooden dowels, some kitchen string, a metal washer. Children can build it themselves with help — that's half the fun.

What you'll need

From any garden centre or DIY shop

  • Two wooden garden dowels or thin bamboo canes (~60–80 cm each)
  • About 2 metres of cotton kitchen string (cotton holds the bubble film better than synthetic)
  • One small metal washer — for weight in the loop
  • Scissors, plus thumb tacks or staples to fix the string

How to build it (~10 minutes)

  1. Cut one piece of string about 1.4 metres long, and a second piece about 60 cm long.
  2. Tie the long string between the tips of the two dowels — let it hang loose to form a U-shape.
  3. Thread the metal washer onto the long string. It sits at the bottom of the U — the weight is what opens the bubble film.
  4. Tie the short string between the dowels about a third of the way down. This is the "top edge" of your bubble window.
  5. Hold both dowels so the strings form a triangle. Dip in the mix, lift slowly, then pull the dowels apart.

Pro tip: the absolute biggest bubbles come on cool, damp evenings with no wind. If it's a bright sunny day, try doing it after dinner instead — the cooler air slows evaporation and the bubble lasts much longer.

Why does it actually work?

If your child asks, here's the answer in language a 7-year-old can follow — and a 12-year-old can dig deeper into.

Soap is the secret

Soap molecules have a water-loving end and a water-hating end. They line up between layers of water like little soldiers, holding the film together. Without soap, water just falls — there's nothing to hold the film up.

Cornflour is the strength

Cornflour and baking powder thicken the water just enough that it doesn't drain out of the bubble film too fast. That's the actual magic — without them, your bubble pops the moment it leaves the wand.

The colours are physics

Those rainbow swirls? That's thin-film interference — the same physics behind oil-on-water rainbows and the iridescent shimmer of a magpie's feathers. Different layer thicknesses reflect different colours of light.

Why bubbles pop

They pop when the water inside the film evaporates faster than gravity can drain it. Heat, sun, dry air = pop quickly. Cool, damp evening = the bubble lives for ages. Test it yourself.

For younger siblings

Three smaller bubble experiments for the kitchen table

If the giant bubble is too much for an indoor day, or you've got a 4-year-old who wants to join in, here are three smaller experiments. All cost almost nothing.

The bubble snake

Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle, stretch an old sock over the cut end, secure with an elastic band. Dip in soapy water. Blow gently into the open neck. A long "snake" of foam pours out the sock end.

  • You'll need: 1 plastic bottle, 1 old sock, washing-up liquid, a tray
  • Best bit: children can blow snakes a metre long

Bouncing bubbles & bubbles-in-bubbles

Add 1 tbsp glycerin to your bubble mix — it's the secret. Now bubbles are strong enough to bounce: blow one in the air, catch it gently on a wool scarf or fluffy mitten and pass it between hands. Or use a straw to blow a dome on a tray, then blow more bubbles inside the first one.

  • You'll need: bubble mix + 1 tbsp glycerin (chemists/Amazon, ~£3), straws, a wool scarf
  • The wow moment: a bubble that bounces off your hand

Y3–Y6 · 30 min · garden

Bubble painting

Add a few drops of food colouring to the bubble mix. Blow bubbles onto paper using a straw. When they pop, they leave a coloured ring print. Layer different colours for proper artwork.
