September is the quintessential calendar moment for establishing learning habits and routines. As children settle into new year groups, the foundations you establish now—metacognitive awareness, growth mindset, effective learning strategies—shape their academic trajectory for the year ahead and beyond.

Too often, study skills are taught implicitly or not at all. Yet research by the Sutton Trust and others shows explicit teaching of metacognition (thinking about thinking) and effective learning strategies is high-impact, particularly for disadvantaged learners. The 2024 Curriculum Review emphasises developing learners who can think critically and learn effectively—study skills are foundational to this.

Metacognition: Thinking About Your Thinking

Metacognition is understanding your own learning process. What helps me remember? When am I focused? What distracts me? When should I ask for help? Children who think metacognitively become independent learners—able to diagnose problems and adjust strategies.

Teach explicitly: Before learning, "What am I about to learn? What do I already know about this? What's my goal?" During learning, "Am I understanding? Should I slow down? Can I explain this to someone else?" After learning, "Did I achieve my goal? What helped? What should I do differently next time?"

Use language: "I'm confused right now, but confusion is part of learning. Let me ask a question." "I made a mistake. Mistakes help me learn." "This is tricky. I'll try a different strategy." This language normalises struggle and positions learners as active agents in their learning.

Growth Mindset: Believing You Can Improve

Carol Dweck's research shows children with growth mindset—belief that ability develops through effort—persist longer, embrace challenges, and learn more deeply than those with fixed mindset. A child who thinks "I'm not good at maths" might give up; one who thinks "I'm not good at maths yet, but I can improve" persists and learns.

Praise effort and strategy, not innate ability. Instead of "You're so clever," say "You worked really hard on that" or "That was a clever strategy—explain how you thought of it." This shifts focus from fixed traits to modifiable effort and thinking. Over time, children develop growth mindset about learning.

Effective Learning Strategies: Research-Backed Techniques

Teach children strategies proven to deepen learning: Retrieval practice (recalling information from memory strengthens it more than re-reading). Spacing (distributing learning over time is more effective than cramming). Elaboration (explaining ideas in your own words, connecting to prior knowledge). Dual coding (combining words with pictures aids memory). Interleaving (mixing different topics when practising prevents false confidence).

These strategies are not intuitive. Many children and adults default to re-reading or highlighting, which feel efficient but are actually low-impact. Explicit teaching transforms study habits. A Year 5 child taught retrieval practice—regularly quizzing themselves—will remember spellings better than one who re-reads.

Establishing Routines and Environmental Supports

Effective learning requires environmental and routine supports. In class: consistent seating areas, clear visual timetables, minimal distractions, predictable routines. At home: quiet study space, consistent homework time, access to resources, parental support without pressure.

Work with families to establish routines. A letter in September: "We're teaching your child to be an effective learner. At home, you can support by: ensuring they have a quiet space to work, having set homework time, asking about their learning ("What's your goal today? How will you remember this?"), celebrating effort and improvement, and modelling lifelong learning yourself."

Time Management and Self-Regulation

Year 5-6 children benefit from explicit time management teaching. How long should a task take? How can you manage time across multiple tasks? What happens when you procrastinate? How do you refocus after distraction? These executive function skills underpin academic success and wellbeing.

Use visual supports: sand timers, checklists, schedules. Gradually fade supports as children develop independence. A Year 6 child who can plan their own study session, manage distractions, and monitor progress is equipped for secondary school.

Learning from Mistakes and Building Resilience

Resilience—bouncing back from setbacks—is central to learning. Every child fails at new tasks. How they respond determines whether they persist. Create classroom cultures where mistakes are celebrated: "Who made an interesting mistake today? Let's learn from it." Where questions are welcomed: "That's a great question—let's investigate." Where struggle is normal: "This is hard. That means your brain is growing."

When children see mistakes as learning opportunities rather than failures, they take risks, ask questions, and persist through difficulty—hallmarks of effective learners.
