Every primary school in England claims to teach resilience, creativity, and critical thinking. Almost none of them can tell you where in the timetable those skills are actually built — systematically, progressively, and from Reception to Year 6.
That's not a criticism. It's a design problem.
For the past decade, the conversation around "future skills" in primary education has followed a predictable pattern. Someone — usually an Ofsted report, a think tank, or a visiting speaker — reminds schools that academic knowledge alone isn't enough. Schools nod. Then they bolt something on: a growth mindset display in the corridor, a wellbeing week in November, a visiting workshop in March. The box gets ticked. The underlying timetable doesn't change.
This is what we call the enrichment model. And it's failing children quietly.
The Enrichment Trap
The enrichment model treats future skills the same way schools treated computing in 2005 — as a nice extra that happens in the gaps. A carousel activity on a wet Wednesday. A collapsed timetable day that nobody follows up on. A PSHE lesson squeezed into twenty minutes between assembly and lunch.
The problem isn't that these activities are bad. Many of them are brilliant. The problem is that they're isolated. A child might experience a powerful lesson on resilience in Year 3 and never revisit the concept structurally until secondary school. They might do an entrepreneurship workshop in Year 5 that lights a fire — but there's no framework to build on that spark in Year 6.
Enrichment, by definition, is supplementary. And anything supplementary is the first thing to be cut when SATs revision starts, when a staff member is absent, or when the timetable gets tight. Which is always.
If a skill matters enough to appear in your school's vision statement, it matters enough to appear in your curriculum architecture.
What the 2024 Curriculum Review Actually Demands
The 2024 Curriculum Review didn't suggest that schools might want to consider future skills. It made financial literacy, media literacy, and citizenship statutory from 2028. That's not a nudge. That's a structural change to what primary schools are legally required to deliver.
Schools now have roughly two years to figure out how to embed these areas — not as additions to an already-packed timetable, but as integrated parts of what they do. And here's the challenge: most schools don't have a framework for doing this. They have subjects. They have topics. They have enrichment. But they don't have a skills architecture.
An architecture is different from a list. A list says "we cover resilience." An architecture says "here's how resilience progresses from EYFS to Year 6, which curriculum areas it maps to, what mastery looks like at each stage, and how we evidence it."
Twelve Skills, Four Levels, Eight Curriculum Areas
When we built the Future Skills Mark at Spark2, we didn't start with activities. We started with a question: if a child left primary school tomorrow, what would they need to thrive — beyond reading, writing, and maths?
The answer became twelve skills, organised into four domains:
The Future Skills Framework
Each skill is mapped across eight curriculum areas and progresses through four developmental levels: Discover (EYFS–Y1), Explore (Y2–Y3), Apply (Y4–Y5), and Lead (Y6).
The critical insight here isn't the skills themselves — you could argue about what belongs on the list. It's the progression model. Every child encounters every skill at every stage of their primary journey, at an age-appropriate depth. That means a four-year-old in Reception isn't doing a "lite" version of a Year 6 lesson. They're doing something fundamentally different — story-based, play-based, sensory — that introduces the same underlying concept.
By Year 6, children aren't just aware of these skills. They're leading them. They're running showcases, mentoring younger pupils, demonstrating mastery. That's not enrichment. That's a curriculum.
Why "Bolt-On" Doesn't Scale
Here's the practical reality that every headteacher knows but rarely says out loud: there is no spare time in the timetable. The hours are fixed. The statutory requirements are growing. Something always gets squeezed.
The bolt-on model fails because it competes for time with everything else. An embedded model succeeds because it doesn't need separate time — it transforms the time you already have. When "Manage Money" is part of your maths week, when "Speak With Confidence" is woven into your literacy presentations, when "Protect the Planet" drives your science investigations — you're not adding hours. You're adding purpose.
This is the difference between enrichment and architecture. Enrichment asks: "When can we fit this in?" Architecture asks: "How does this connect to what we're already doing?"
The Evidence Gap
There's another problem with the enrichment model that's rarely discussed: you can't evidence it. A school can say "we did a resilience workshop in September" but they can't show you a child's resilience journey from Reception to Year 6. They can't show Ofsted a progression pathway. They can't show parents a portfolio of their child's skill development.
This matters because the things we can't measure, we tend to deprioritise. And future skills have been deprioritised for exactly this reason — not because schools don't care, but because schools don't have the tools to track what they care about.
A framework changes that. When skills are mapped, levelled, and tracked, they become visible. When they're visible, they become valued. When they're valued, they actually get taught — consistently, across every classroom, every term, every year.
What This Looks Like in Practice
Imagine a school where every year group knows which three Future Skills they're focusing on each term. Where teachers have ready-made resources that map skills to their existing topics. Where children in Year 4 are building digital portfolios that track their progress across all twelve skills. Where Year 6 pupils run a Christmas Fair not just as a fun event, but as a structured enterprise project covering teamwork, money management, public speaking, and creativity — with evidence captured along the way.
That's not a fantasy school. That's what the Future Skills Mark is designed to make possible — without adding a single hour to the timetable or a single page to teachers' planning load.
The Question Every School Leader Should Ask
Here's the simplest test I can offer. Open your school's vision statement. Read the aspirational words — resilience, creativity, confidence, collaboration, whatever language you use. Now open your curriculum map. Can you point to exactly where each of those words is delivered, progressed, and evidenced from EYFS to Year 6?
If you can't, it's not because you're doing anything wrong. It's because you're working with a system that was designed for knowledge delivery, not skill development. The two require different architectures.
The 2024 Curriculum Review is accelerating this. But the real urgency isn't compliance — it's opportunity. The schools that build genuine skills architecture now won't just be ready for 2028. They'll be the ones that parents choose, Ofsted recognises, and — most importantly — children remember.
Future skills aren't enrichment. They never were. It's time we designed our schools to reflect that.
