How Rockets
Work

Rockets work because of a simple rule: when something pushes one way, it moves the other way. Hot gas pushes down out of the bottom, and the rocket flies up! Try blowing up a balloon and letting it go โ€” it zooms away just like a rocket!

The first rockets were invented in China over 800 years ago! They were fireworks. The same idea that makes fireworks go whoosh is the same idea that sends astronauts to the Moon!

Balloon Rocket
Let go of a blown-up balloon โ€” the air shoots out one way and the balloon flies the other way. That is how a rocket works!

Rocket Fuel
Rockets carry special fuel inside them. There is no air in space, so they bring everything they need to make the fire that pushes them along.

Two Types of Fuel
Some rockets use runny fuel like a liquid. Others use solid fuel, a bit like a giant firework! Some rockets even use both.

Saturn V &
The Moon Race

A long time ago, two countries had a race to see who could get to the Moon first! America built a giant rocket called Saturn V. It was as tall as 36 houses stacked on top of each other! In 1969, it carried astronauts to the Moon for the very first time.

Imagine going on a bus trip and then throwing the bus away when you get there! That is what rockets used to do โ€” they could only fly once. Now, a clever company called SpaceX makes rockets that can land back on Earth and fly again and again!
