Why This Works
Every Spark2 activity follows the same four-step pattern. Once you know it, you can deliver any activity with confidence. The method keeps students engaged, encourages prediction and discussion, and connects learning to real life.
🎣 1. HOOK (1-2 minutes)
Grab their attention with a surprising question or demonstration.
- Start with something unexpected that creates curiosity
- Ask an open question: "What do you think will happen if...?"
- Don't give away the answer yet!
- Build anticipation and engagement before the main activity
🤔 2. PREDICT (1-2 minutes)
Get students to commit to a prediction before seeing the result.
- Ask: "Hands up if you think X will happen... hands up for Y..."
- Encourage students to explain their reasoning
- Accept all predictions without judgement
- This is crucial - predictions make the discovery memorable
🔬 3. DISCOVER (3-5 minutes)
Do the experiment and let students observe what actually happens.
- Perform the demonstration clearly so everyone can see
- Let students react naturally to the "wow" moment
- Ask: "Who predicted that? Were you surprised?"
- Repeat if needed - some discoveries need a second look
💡 4. CONNECT (2-3 minutes)
Link the discovery to real-world applications and the science behind it.
- Explain the science in age-appropriate language
- Ask: "Where else might we see this in real life?"
- Connect to curriculum topics where relevant
- Encourage further questions and curiosity

Adapting for Different Year Groups
Same activity, different approach. Here's what to adjust:
EYFS & KS1
- Simpler vocabulary
- More guided predictions
- Shorter explanations
- Focus on observation and wonder
- Use "magic" language to build excitement
Lower KS2
- Introduce scientific vocabulary
- Encourage reasoning for predictions
- Start connecting to curriculum
- Ask "why do you think...?" questions
- Simple cause and effect discussions
Upper KS2
- Full scientific vocabulary
- Deeper explanations of principles
- Challenge predictions with follow-up questions
- Discuss variables and fair testing
- Connect to real-world careers in STEM
