The Spark2 Method

A simple framework for interactive science that actually works

Why This Works

Every Spark2 activity follows the same four-step pattern. Once you know it, you can deliver any activity with confidence. The method keeps students engaged, encourages prediction and discussion, and connects learning to real life.

1

HOOK

2

PREDICT

3

DISCOVER

4

CONNECT

🎣 1. HOOK (1-2 minutes)

Grab their attention with a surprising question or demonstration.

🤔 2. PREDICT (1-2 minutes)

Get students to commit to a prediction before seeing the result.

🔬 3. DISCOVER (3-5 minutes)

Do the experiment and let students observe what actually happens.

💡 4. CONNECT (2-3 minutes)

Link the discovery to real-world applications and the science behind it.

⏱️ Rough Timing Guide

Each activity takes about 8-12 minutes total. Adjust based on your class.

Adapting for Different Year Groups

Same activity, different approach. Here's what to adjust:

EYFS & KS1

  • Simpler vocabulary
  • More guided predictions
  • Shorter explanations
  • Focus on observation and wonder
  • Use "magic" language to build excitement

Lower KS2

  • Introduce scientific vocabulary
  • Encourage reasoning for predictions
  • Start connecting to curriculum
  • Ask "why do you think...?" questions
  • Simple cause and effect discussions

Upper KS2

  • Full scientific vocabulary
  • Deeper explanations of principles
  • Challenge predictions with follow-up questions
  • Discuss variables and fair testing
  • Connect to real-world careers in STEM
